Chief Investment Officer, Single Family Office, St. Louis
Confidential (Single Family Office)
A well-established St. Louis single family office ($5B-plus in assets, 20-plus households, 100-plus entities) is hiring a hands-on Chief Investment Officer as part of a planned leadership transition. A working CIO role in a highly tax-aware ecosystem, coaching the investment function and engaging directly with family clients across generations.
The Client: Our Client is a well-established single-family office headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri, serving multiple generations of a prominent family and their affiliated entities. The office meets the Dodd-Frank definition of a single-family office and is not subject to SEC oversight. The organization manages in excess of $5 billion in assets across more than 20 family households and over 100 affiliated legal and financial entities, including multiple partnerships, trusts and foundations. The Client has a team of approximately 12 professionals and is recognized for its deep expertise in long-range tax planning, gift and estate structuring, and compliance. Tax strategy is foundational to the investment function. The current CEO/CIO will retire in late 2026; the organization will promote its current President and General Counsel to CEO and intends to hire a dedicated Chief Investment Officer as part of a thoughtful leadership transition.
The Opportunity: This is not a delegator CIO role. It is a working, hands-on CIO role operating within a highly tax-aware, sophisticated investment ecosystem. - Serve as the 'coach' of the investment function - selecting and overseeing managers rather than acting as primary portfolio manager. - Navigate cash management, liquidity, partnership mechanics, subscription and distribution flows, and tax timing considerations. - Oversee complex reporting structures across numerous entities. - Work effectively with family members spanning multiple generations.
The CIO will report to the CEO and Board and operate in close partnership to align investment policy, asset allocation, tax strategy, liquidity management, and governance processes, while serving as a key resource to family clients across generations.
Key Responsibilities span: investment strategy and asset allocation; portfolio oversight and manager governance across public equities, fixed income, private equity, real estate and alternatives; tax-sensitive investment leadership integrating tax timing, gain realization, charitable planning and entity structure; liquidity, treasury and partnership mechanics; and reporting, governance and family engagement (regular performance and risk reporting, educating family clients, meeting individuals across generations).
Candidate Profile: 10+ years of relevant investment experience; deep understanding of multiple asset classes including private equity and alternatives; experience with ultra-high-net-worth families; strong exposure to tax-aware investing; CFA and/or MBA preferred. High integrity, discretion and a fiduciary mindset; strong interpersonal skills; comfort operating hands-on; humility and steadiness during a leadership transition.
Location & Work Model: St. Louis, Missouri - full time in-office. For confidential consideration, please send resume and cover letter to Neil Kreuzberger at Kreuzberger Associates, LLC. Email: [email protected].
